چکیده
We show that if an NP-complete set or a coNP-complete set is polynomial-time disjunc-tive truth-table reducible to a sparse set then FP NP jj = FP NP log]. With a similar argument we show also that if SAT is O(log n)-approximable then FP NP jj = FP NP log]. Since FP NP jj = FP NP log] implies that SAT is O(logn)-approximable BFT97], it follows from our result that the two hypotheses are equivalent. We also show that if an NP-complete set or a coNP-complete set is disjunctively reducible to a sparse set of polylogarithmic density then P = NP.

Monotonous and Randomized Reductions to Sparse Sets
An oracle machine is called monotonous, if after a negative answer the machine does not ask further queries to the oracle. For example, one truth-table, conjunctive, and Hausdorr reducibilities are monotonous. We study the consequences of the existence of sparse hard sets for diierent complexity classes under monotonous and randomized reductions. We prove trade-oos between the randomized time c...
متن کاملBounded Queries to SAT and the
We study the complexity of decision problems that can be solved by a polynomial-time Turing machine that makes a bounded number of queries to an NP oracle. Depending on whether we allow some queries to depend on the results of other queries, we obtain two (probably) diierent hierarchies. We present several results relating the bounded NP query hierarchies to each other and to the Boolean hierar...

Given an n-vertex graph G = (V,E) and a set R ⊆ {{x, y} | x, y ∈ V } of requests, we consider to assign a set of edges to each vertex in G so that for every request {u, v} in R the union of the edge sets assigned to u and v contains a path from u to v. The Minimum Certificate Dispersal Problem (MCD) is defined as one to find an assignment that minimizes the sum of the cardinality of the edge se...
متن کاملOn the Structure of Bounded Queries to Arbitrary NP Sets
Kadin [6] showed that if the Polynomial Hierarchy (PH) has infinitely many levels, then for all k, PSAT[k] ⊂ PSAT[k+1]. This paper extends Kadin’s technique and shows that a proper query hierarchy is not an exclusive property of NP complete sets. In fact, for any A ∈ NP − l̂ow3, if PH has infinitely many levels, then PA[k] ⊂ PA[k+1]. Moreover, for the case of parallel queries, PA‖[k+1] is not ev...
متن کاملReductions to Sets of Low Information Content
In this paper we study the complexity of sets that reduce to sparse sets (and tally sets), and the complexity of the simplest sparse sets to which such sets reduce. We show even with respect to very exible reductions that NP cannot have sparse hard sets unless P = NP; an immediate consequence of our results is: If any NP-complete set conjunctively reduces to a sparse set, then P = NP. We also s...
